A request for proposal (RFQ) complete with Terms of reference (TOR’s) was issued by UNICEF since the Ministry of Health (MoH) requested an oxygen manifold and pipeline system for the Monkey Bay District Hospital. Intaka undertook a site visit and inspection of the hospital and was awarded the contract on the 22nd of November 2023. Intaka Tech previously completed two projects for UNICEF at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Malawi.
A general plant room was constructed by our local Malawian construction partner specifically to house the 2 x 8-cylinder manifold, complete with it 8-cylinder reserve supply. The plant room houses the primary operational alarm which relays to the secondary operational alarm at the nurse’s station. A further 10 clinical alarms were installed throughout the hospital to detect and alarm (audio-visual) staff if any over/under pressure drops occur in the medical gas pipeline system.
The medical gas pipeline system comprises of 468 meters of piping and 55 surface mounted oxygen points installed in the maternity ward, general ward, and hospital’s theatre complex. A further 20 basic vertical Bed Head Units (BHU’s) were installed in the paediatric ward, since surface mounted pipelines could be damaged by young patients hanging onto them. The installation was handed over on the 8th February 2024.
